Mountain Goats - The Life of the World to ComeOver the past two years, John Darnielle, the frontman for indie-folk band The Mountain Goats, has had to deal with a lot of the shit that comes along with living life on this earth.  Apparently he has had to face some hard times including watching people close to him die.  So in his effort to seek solace and comfort in those dark times, he turned to old religious texts and music.  He spent a lot of time pouring over the Bible, of which he’s had a longstanding love. Much to the chagrin of some of his peers, he found himself diving into an Amy Grant box set and discovered the canon of the late great Rich Mullins.  And from these spiritual ventures, we get The Life of the World to Come.  I’ve listened to the album a few times now.  Musically it’s one of their best efforts.  Lyrically I’m still processing it, and I have a feeling I will be for a long time.  It’s definitely worth your time, sure to make your ears bleed.

this is the first song that john darnielle, lead singer of the mountain goats, ever wrote for his wife. this song was written back when they were still dating. and it is named after the her mailbox number that he used to write to her at when she was in college. it’s a real short but sweet love song. and this acoustic performance of this previously unreleased song he did on a daytrotter session is well worth your time.
