Monsters of Folk wrote a letter to God and put and on their debut album. The song is appropriately titled, “Dear God (Sincerely M.O.F.)”. It is a fascinating letter that asks the age old question, “If your love is still around, why do we suffer?” They are real honest and also manage to make some great observations about who our God is. It is obvious that at least one, if not all of those guys are seeking the truth. Hopefully it isn’t long before they stumble upon it.

Well just recently they made a mesmerizing video to accompany this great tune. I had a hard time taking my eyes off it for even a second, especially during the first 2:00 minutes. Definitely one of the best videos that I have seen this year.

Ward, and My Morning Jacket fans, I was a little disappointed when I first heard Monsters of Folk. It’s not a very catchy album. But I think that some of the let down can be attributed to the completely unrealistic expectations that I had for this album. And as time has passed, the album is slowly but surely reaching those expectations. It is definitely one of those albums that needs time and space to grow on you. The more I listen to it, the more I recognized how these four are truly masters of their trade. Everything on this record is just so tight and I absolutely love the way that share the mic throughout each song. I really enjoy the way their voices sound together. Which is interesting, since I don’t particularly love any of their voices individually.

When I first shared the song “Say Please” with you all back in July, I wasn’t really impressed. It has since become one of my favorite songs of the year. And I really enjoyed the video that they created to accompany it. Enjoy the Music Video of the Week. And then listen to a few songs from the record that are streaming below.
Ward, you will be excited to know that they are giving away one of the songs off of their new album for free. And they have announced a series of fall tour dates. Oddly enough I’d say that the song is pretty good mixture of each of their individual musical stylings. I’m not hooked yet, but I’m definitely intrigued. But you can decide for yourself.

Ward, Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Conor Oberst, and Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes producer). Talk of this album has been floating around the blogosphere ever since they first went on tour together in ’04. It is great to finally receive news that this record is actually complete. The self-titled debut is set to be released 9/22 via Shangri-La. According to the press release, these four guys will be playing all the instruments on the record. Here are a few tunes for those of you who are foolish enough to think that these guys don’t make folk music. I am so stinkin’ excited for this record.
