According to guitarist Chris Walla, the band will be departing from their typical guitar strumming and will be using a lot more reverb and synths. While I think it still pales in comparison to their masterpiece, Transatlantacism, I still really enjoyed Narrow Stairs. But I got bored with that sound from them soon after hearing The Open Book EP. So I am glad to hear that they will be changing things up again and continuing to evolve as a band, and am real excited to hear Codes and Keys. Then again, I get excited pretty much any time Benjamin Gibbard is writing songs. I will probably buy this album, regardless of the amount of praise/criticism it receives, just to hear some new words from Gibbard. I have posted the newly released tracklist below and to go along with it are a few live cuts for your listening pleasure.

1. Home Is A Fire
2. Codes And Keys
3. Some Boys
4. Doors Unlocked And Open
5. You Are A Tourist
6. Unobstructed Views
7. Monday Morning
8. Portable Television
9. Underneath The Sycamore
10. St Peter’s Cathedral
11. Stay Young, Go Dancing

The Connecticut based duo have apparently been “talking about doing a covers record for a long time.” I am personally glad that all the talking paid off and that this album has finally come to fruition. The few tracks that I have heard so far are very different from the original, but they stay within Mates of State’s unique indie-pop style. I am very excited to hear the rest of the record.

1. Laura (Girls)

I HATE CHRISTMAS MUSIC

Why do I hate it? Well, in recent years it has just become a platform for crappy pop stars to keep re-covering the same christmas songs over and over. I don’t need to hear Carrie Underwood sing White Christmas, or Wynonna singing Silent Night, or any big shot artist covering a christmas classic to get me into the spirit.

I think I should stop being such a grinch, and just let the infographic do that talking. So here are some of my favorite original Christmas songs:

Alan Parsons In A Winter Wonderland by Grandaddy

Another Christmas Song by Stephen Colbert

Christmas Time Is Here by Vince Guaraldi Trio

Did I Make You Cry On Christmas Day (Well, You Deserved It!) by Sufjan Stevens

Don’t Shoot Me Santa by The Killers

I Hate Christmas Parties – by Relient K

Love Came Down At Christmas by Jars of Clay

When I Get Home for Christmas by Snow Patrol

Xmas Party by Middle Distance Runner

I love Grandaddy‘s rendition of “Walking In a Winter Wonderland,” but that may also be because I’m a fan of The Alan Parson Project. The song features some subtle humor about Parsons, but knowing a thing about him is not required to enjoy the track. Stephen Colbert is getting exactly what he wants with the next song, he has become part of my holiday listening tradition, and it is hilarious. Fans of Arrested Development, Peanuts Cartoons, and The Royal Tennenbaums will recognize the next little gem by the Vince Guaraldi Trio. Sufjan Stevens put out his giant box set of Christmas music a few years ago, and song #4 is probably my favorite from that whole collection. The Killers’s song about a guy potentially getting murdered by Santa is interesting to say the least, watching the music video is a must. If Christmas time just gets you down, then be sure to listen to the track by Relient K. I love the next song by Jars of Clay, who took an awesome beat and made an enjoyable new Christmas classic. Snow Patrol fans should not be without song #8. I’m a huge fan, and that song is just awesome. And finally, song #9 is by Middle Distance Runner. If you’ve never checked them out, I hope this song drives you to do so.

Okay. I was a bit of a Grinch earlier, but if you examine the chart you will see that there does exist a small sliver of well done covers. So here’s three Christmas covers I do enjoy, and are part of my holiday canon:

Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) by Death Cab for Cutie

Holly Jolly Christmas covered by The Format

O Come, O Come Emmanuel covered by Belle & Sebastian

These songs may not be original compositions, but I much prefer these to the originals. Death Cab’s version of “Baby Please Come Home” is just great. And a classic from Belle & Sebastian.

I hope you’ve found some new additions to your holiday listening list, and we here at IHYEB wish you a very Merry Christmas!

Waxploitation records has just released the second installment of their ongoing benefit series for Darfur. 100% of all profits made on this stellar compilation will go to Doctors Without Borders, Human Rights Watch, and Oxfam America. Each of these three organizations are doing incredible things to help those suffering from the crises taking place in Darfur.

Several of the best indie artists in the business have donated rare and exclusive songs for this great cause. So I encourage you to go to iTunes or Amazon and download these tracks. It is a great way to get some new music and love your neighbor at the same time. You should also check out Causes 1, which is also loaded with great artists, such as Bright Eyes, The Shins, Spoon and Death Cab. And if you go to the Causes store, you can buy both albums for just $17.

New Conor Oberst Track

Conor Oberst posted a new song from his forthcoming album, Outer South, on his web-site to be streamed. Click here to listen to “Slowly (Oh So Slowly).” Sounds like he is going to continue one with The Mystical Valley Band for at least one more record, which is great news for us.

New Leonard Cohen Album

If you head on over to NPR you can stream in its entirety the double disc collection Live in London by Leonard Cohen. This is a great introduction for anyone who’s only interraction with Cohen’s music is the Rufus Wainwright cover of his epic “Hallelujah” found on the Shrek soundtrack.

The Killers Cover Bright Eyes

The Killers will relaese their song Spaceman off of their new record Day & Age as a single on April 14th. Which wouldn’t be noteworthy at all, but for the cover of the very country Bright Eyes song, ” Four Winds” that was recorded for the B-side.

Where The Wild Things Are

The trailer for the new Spike Jonze interpretation of possibly the greatest children’s book ever, Where the Wild Things Are was released last week, and it looks awesome. That partly due to how awesome Wild Thing looks, and then also because of the sweet version of The Arcade Fire’s “Wake Up” that is playing in the background.

New Death Cab For Cutie Record

Stereogum premiered a new Death Cab For Cutie record, The Open Door EP. Each day last week they would post one of the five tracks that were recorded during the Narrow Stairs process, but are definitely not outcasts. My favorite might be the last track, which is the only unoriginal track of the bunch, a stripped down demo of “Talking Bird.”

i really enjoyed watching this video. i love it when either a song or a video tells a story, and i especially love it when they correspond the way they do in this one. with as much music as i listen to, unfortunately a lot of times i really miss a lot of what is going on in a song. i love to give a song, no an album, my undivided attention. some people think it is weird, but i love to curl up on the couch or go for a walk with nothing on my mind but listening to music. with as much as i have going on in my life right now, it is getting harder and harder to have those times. so i am forced to make the music merely a secondary activity, something that merely adds to what i am doing. now i don’t dislike that at all, but you end up missing a lot of the song. you miss certain sounds and you usually end up missing the meaning and purpose of the song. that is what happened to me with this fantastic single off of death cab for cutie’s most recent album, narrow stairs. i had listened to it over and over, but i had no idea what the song was about, that is until i saw this great video directed by autumn de wilde. the video is nothing spectacular, but i really appreciated it because it helped draw me in and allowed me to focus on the incredibly sad lyrics of this song. i found the lyrics and video very interesting, but i have somewhat mixed emotions about the message it sends. i get pretty frustrated with a lot of the messages being given to us by the media and hollywood in regards to love. now i understand this song, because that was one of my biggest fears back when i was dating was that i would end up settling or somehow end up with “the wrong person for me.” while i don’t suggest just going out there and taking no thought into who you choose as a spouse, at the same time i don’t think that there is one person out there that was pre-chosen for you and if you don’t wait and find that person that you screwed up. i think that what makes that person “the one” is that you chose them to be “the one.” love is a choice, not a feeling. it just makes me sad when i see all these people out there petrified of marriage because they are so concerned about finding “the one.” i think if they just spent more time focusing on loving the people that they are with that they would have a lot less to worry about.

by the way i am a fan of narrow stairs. hopefully a full review of the album will come in the future. but for now enjoy this great video.

in honor of the new death cab cd, which came out today, i have a short documentary about the making of the new album that was done exclusively for current tv. it’s nothing too terribly exciting, but if you are a death cab fan you will probably find it interesting and and entertaining. if nothing else it’s a way to hear a little bit of the new album before you decide to rush out and buy it. i’m not sure what i think of the new stuff so far, and will probably do a review in the future once i get the chance to hear the album in its entirety. so for now, here is this little documentary and one of the two songs i have heard so far.
