Two New Damien Rice Songs

Damien Rice played a show at Los Angeles’ Hotel Cafe last week and played two new songs during the set.   It has been 6 long years since 9, Rice’s sophomore album. Which, if you ask me, is far too long.  I hope this is a sign that a new album is on the horizon.  But even if that isn’t the case, this should hold fans over for at least a few more years.

Johnny Cash Christmas Special – Silent Night

In the late 1970s, Johnny Cash hosted a Christmas Special each year, and pitchfork has decided to host a couple of their favorite moments the show.  I really enjoyed them and I am sure you will too.

Here is a great version of Silent Night, performed by Johnny and his wife June Carter.

Here is the great gospel tune “This Train is Bound for Glory” performed by Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, and Carl Perkins.

The late, great Andy Kauffman showing off his expertise by doing Elvis Presley’s “That’s Where Your Heartaches Begin.”

Here are a few more versions of possibly one of the most gorgeous Christmas songs ever written.

Ben Harper & the Blind Boys of Alabama – Silent Night

Bing Crosby – Silent Night

Bright Eyes – Silent Night

Damien Rice & Lisa Hannigan – Silent Night

Hugh Laurie – Silent Night

Johnny Cash – Silent Night

Lifehouse – Silent Night

My Morning Jacket – Silent Night

Priscilla Ahn – Silent Night

Relient K – Silent Night; Away in a Manger

Sarah McLachlan – Silent Night

Stevie Nicks – Silent Night

Sufjan Stevens – Silent Night

Tom Waits – Silent Night

Wow…kind of exhausting.  So if you dared to actually sample them all please share with us your favorite.  Were you suprised by which one you liked the most. I know I was.  I hope your ears aren’t actually bleeding, I just want you really enjoy the music.

Now I realize that this has nothing to do with music, but it is one of the coolest things I have seen in a long time. This is right up there with news of Derek Webb giving away his entire album for free. Ever since I was in the 4th grade when I first embarked on my journey down the Oregon Trail, I have been a sucker for simple addictive computer games. I am especially prone to word games, such as Yahoo’s Text Twist, or Fowl Words, which I highly recommend. But see I didn’t give you a link to those, because I don’t want you to hooked on those like I did, when you can play one that is just addicting and just as fun, and you can save lives while doing so. I’m not even kidding. When you play this simple but addictive vocab game, 20 grains of rice are donated through the UN World Food Program for each word that get correct. Believe it or not, you can actually have fun, improve your vocabulary, and help to end world hunger all at the same time. And you can do it all right here.

I just couldn’t resist.

on june 1st damien rice set out on a road trip from dublin to barcelona with two friends and a portable recording studio packed into his mini. the plan is for them to stop along the way at random place to write and record a new song each day. their goal is to arrive in dublin on the 10th, which would be ten days and ten new songs, thus a new album. then he’s gonna see radiohead play and head back home for the leonard cohen dates. well here is a sweet track off of his live album for those of you like me that aren’t going to get a chance to see damien play live this summer, but would give your left pinky toe for the chance to do so.
