One of my favorite remix outfits, Soulwax hasn’t spread themselves too thin. Sometimes operating under different names, such as Too Many DJ’s, and other unknown aliases, the guy’s aren’t afraid to make some noise.

Familiar with the phrase, “If you’re not pissing someone off, you’re not trying hard enough?” Well these guys surely are, taking plenty of songs that most people would soundly think do NOT need remixing, and here we are gathered to talk about one such instance.

I love the Beatles. A lot of people love the Beatles, and apparentyly the guys @ Soulwax do too. Their remix of Eleanor Rigby shows some real love to the original version.

A few small notes I took when I first “tasted” the song:

• DRUMS?!??
• instrumental
• works with the original flow of the song
• keeps some of the stereo effects of the original piece
• very electronic sounding
• about the same length as the original song

Note: If you perfectly overlay the two songs…. it’s amazing.

The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby (Soulwax Remix)

When I start to listen to this song I find that the echoey choir sound in the background reminds me of the pure emotion that the song drives initially. So the added sounds are merely nothing more than an audible representation of one persons emotional evaluation of the song.

Too technical? It sounds like it feels.

This remix is one of those… untraditional remixes, and because of that it becomes something much deeper and more important.

Johnny Cash - Port of Lonely Hearsts (Midnight Juggernauts Remix)

This song is sure to evoke some kind of emotion in you, and when it does I hope you embrace it.

WOMAN by Wolfmother. That’s right, the guitar hero classic.

Well this remix is compliments of one of my favorite remix groups, MSTRKRFT. And just like I said a month ago with The Stills, this song retains most of it’s rock elemants and doesn’t come out sounding like a piece of techno.

Well with that said, I’m glad to finally be back away from a month of Avalanches, (whom I adore) as well as an extensive election season.

First up, Badly Drawn Boy - The Shining (The Avalanches Good Word For The Weekend Remix).

This song actually sounds like a missing track from Since I Left You. It’s so beautifully done, I’d really never know the difference. What makes this so much different from an Avalanches original track is that their signature style is only applied to the background of the song, and not onto the vocals at all. A beautiful listen, and one that is perfectly blissful, and perfect for relaxing.

A huge change of pace now, Belle & Sebastian - I’m A Cuckoo (Avalanches Remix).

This is completely different, almost so well done that you’d think they were playing along live with the tribal music. Doesn’t have any retro throwback sounds to it, but is still amazing, and it inspires that same sense of hope and wonder that I’ve come to expect from any Avalanche song.

So last month before I’d even started thinking about doing this October Avalanche series, I posted a remix of “Since I Left You” (link). This is what inspired me to do this entire series.

So here we are, talking about the final EP the band put out, At Last Alone. Nine tracks, 5 remixes, 4 rare/unreleased.

I’m only going to highlight my favorites today, but true fans will want the entire EP.

2.A Different Feeling (Ernest St. Laurent Remix)
A much softer version, of the song. This is my favorite way to enjoy this song, and it’s more polished feel comes across nicely, in a way that does not seem to betray the original.

4. Electricity (Dr. Rockit’s Dirty Kiss)
My favorite remix of Electricity, it reimagines the song in an entirely different way. The remix brings new light to some of the more obtuse sounds hidden in the song, as well as introducing some really cool new sounds. I prefer the original version, but this one is really cool to listen to also.

5. Thank You Caroline (Andy Votel Remix)
Thank You Caroline is one of the rarer tracks by the Avalanches, (anyone missing the original version can email me) but all the while still one of the best. Thank You Caroline is an original piece of music by The Avalanches, and it blows my mind in it’s simplicity. This remix pays excellent tribute to the late great song, until about halfway where it starts to do it’s own thing.

This post is just a continuation of where I stopped. So it’s going to feel shorter. So to make up for it, I’m doing 4 songs instead of three.

10. Electricity
This is one of the best tracks of the album right here. It’s so perfectly elegant. It rolls up multiple styles in one big burrito of musical love. The sounds are so different that this song just feels out of place compared to other tracks on the album. The sounds are perfect and the flow is great. Definitely a great candidate for any great study-rock playlist.

13. Frontier Psychiatrist
Great song, or Greatest song? Opening with some crazy lines from a film, the drums immediately kick in setting a nice beat behind a very dramatic setting. The haunting choir and horns suck you in instantly. The comedy styling of Wayne & Shuster get turned into a chilling vocalization of a nightmare visit to the psychiatrist. Most of the song makes zero sense, but the sound of it all is breathtaking. At the halfway point, the drums with the delay effects sound brilliant, and then we return to the lyrics. “Ranagazoo let’s have a tune!”. The end is quite odd, “some birds are funny when they talk”. This is my favorite song on the album and embodies everything The Avalanches are.

16. Little Journey
This really is just a warm-up track, but it’s nice and sweet and enjoyable, and sets up one of the best songs on the album.

17. Live At Dominoes
Second to last track, and it’s a wonderful infusion of retro sound and electronic. I especially enjoy the end when things begin to shift more to a sound full of strings. This is just a wonderful mash of samples and is a fun little romp.

There it is. A wonderful album. If you want it? GO BUY IT! It’s worth every penny. Maybe even a few more than that. I bought my vinyl copy from Tower.com, but they also sell that album as a compact disc.

The first key note to this album is to make sure that you will hear it in a gapless manner. So if you get it into iTunes, check that box, or if you have a physical copy just hit play. The tracks blend right into one another with little to no actual indication that it had changed.

This is an amazing album with more than 3,500 vinyl samples used. This truly is the definition of remixing taken at a very literal level.

The album starts strong with the sweet melody of Jeanne Solo singing a portion of her song, “Everyday”. The entire ambiance of the background does add to the song and makes it a very lively and enjoyable experience.

1. Since I Left You

By the time  we work our way to track seven, the group is pretty well established itself. In this track the band begins to truly explore the sounds, mixing in some more obscure vocals. This is one of the more memorable tracks for me at least, and it begins to set the stage for later songs like “Diners Only”, and “A Different Feeling”

7. Close To You

My favorite track of the first half of the album. Some of the broadest ranges of sound, very interesting to listen to. High energy, and tons of fun.  I love the last part of the song when the beat kicks up, and the Violin comes in. It’s one of the best parts of the album. It ends leading into another great track, “Electricity”. I’ll talk more about that song next week.

9. A Different Feeling

I hope you’re really enjoying this series as much as I am. I ordered the album on Vinyl last week, and I am very eagerly anticipating it’s arrival! So don’t forget, that you need to buy the albums of your favorite artists to SUPPORT THEM!

The Avalanches are just one of those groups that are hard to explain. I’m having a hard time doing just that right now. But I’m gonna try to explain them anyways. They have two different stages of their career. (1995-1998) The Punk Rap era, and (1999-Now) The Remixer era. I can’t say I’m much of a fan of their early stuff, but because it truly is unlike the other artists in the genre it is still intresting.

So this week I’m going to start from the begining and get through the early years in one big swoop.

They have an EP called El Producto from 1997 and I must say that it is almost impossible to track down. I spent a few weeks scouring message boards, and peer to peer networks to get most of my tracks for this post.

Besides, this is also the holy grail of hard to find Avalanches recordings, and any true fan must have this in their collection.

Well today is the day I break the mold. One of my favorite songs of all time, Still In Love Song by The Stills was included in a special 45 minute mix by notorious electropop-ers Cut Copy in it’s extended 12″ remix form. I fell in love instantly, and I bought it off iTunes immediately (something we encourage whole heartedly). And you know what, the remix is true to the song, it enhances the original by elevating it to a new level it couldn’t before.

I can’t believe it took me this long to remember to dig out my favorite remix! Mainly because it’s one of those songs I bury all year, and dust off when the first signs of fall start showing. Which is a friendly reminder that this is the last remix wednesday of September. Next month I’ll be devoting several posts to the ultimate remix group, The Avalanches. To get a preview of what to expect, just check out last week’s post.

But until then, you need to add some serious rock remixing to your life, and I’m sure you’ll agree this song will do the trick.

So who are The Avalanches?

Well what started as 90’s rock/rap group eventually merged into a electronica phenomena. Now I’m using the word electronica, but this band is one of the bands that is truly beyond a genre. Their sole album Since I Left You (2000) was compiled from 3,500 different samples from vinyl records. I’d say they have smashed the definition of genre.

What I have here today is not that amazing album, but rather one of the songs remixed. This remix is an essential download. It is a perfect meditation-ish vibe that leaves you soothed yet energized. What starts out slow, ends up being upbeat, then slowly progresses back to slow again. I picture this as being danced to by an elegent trio of dancers.

If anything can be inferred from what I’ve said so far, is that words do not explain The Avalanches.

Martin released his first full comedy album two years ago titled “These Are Jokes”. This is my favorite comedy album of all time, narrily beating all 3 Mitch Hedburg albums (thats right 3, a new one just came out even though he’s dead). Demetri has a bright future ahead of him, with a new Comedy Central show called Important Things with Demetri Martin airing this fall.

So how does this relate to Remixes? And… This is why my editor will kill me. It won’t.

Soooo… Nathan I apologize, but this comedian is hilarious, and hopefully after listening you won’t be so disappointed. At the very least, the glockenspiel should make you smile.

Note: this interview was conducted in August 2005 when I was working on my own podcast called Blastcast. I have the actual audio posted at the bottom. The production quality isn’t that great, but none-the-less I had fun. And the truth is I wouldn’t be here writing today if I hadn’t had some of the experiences I did while working with podcasting. Cody Bromley: So you guys are from Sweden, or it says so on your site.

Joel Bervquist: Yeah.

CB: So how’s Sweden? Is it nice over there?

JB: It’s bright summer right now. And we had two rainy days, but before that 28 degrees Celsius (82 Fahrenheit).

CB: It’s just hot here too. So what got you guys into music? When did you guys get started with the band? Did it just sound like a cool idea?

JB: Started when me and Johan, the drummer, were 14 years old. We went to the same French class. And we weren’t very good at French so we decided music was our thing. And from that day, which was in ‘93 something, we played together; and in ‘95 we formed the band Bombhappies.

So what got you into podcasting?

CB: Well one day I woke up, and I listened to Daily Source Code, and decided that’s what I’m doing with my life now.

JB: We’re thinking about starting a station [podcast] of our own, in swedish though.

CB: Hm. I don’t know swedish, but I might still listen. Just to see whats on the pod-o-sphere. So how many members are there in the band?

JB: We’re five. Together with me is Andreas the basist, and Johan the drummer. The other guys didn’t make it to this rehearsal.

CB: Too bad. So how many other podcasts have you guys been on?

JB: Well I think.. I put us up there [The band posted their music to a site where podcasters can use their music for free called the Podsafe Music Network] about 1 half week ago, and now it’s been 16. Which is totally amazing because bands from Sweden usually get big in Japan, but we’re big on the internet in the States.

CB: I’m glad you put it up there because I really enjoy it, and my listeners do to.

JB: How many listen to your show?

CB: Last time I check from my Feedburner account, it said… 32. Or, I had 32 in one day.

JB: Cause as an artist on the Podsafe Music Network you don’t see much of a statistic online.

CB: I had 27 hits today, but the show won’t be posted until tomorrow.

JB: We’re amazed that actually one person, if one person is interested we’re really happy.

CB: I was really excited when I found your stuff, but nobody had rated it. And I was shocked because I thought this stuff was amazing.

JB: You’re probably the reason we are top rated [They were top rated, they were eventually overtaken by another artist.] because maybe only one person has rated us.

CB: I rated the song “Heidi” like twenty times.

JB: Cause I logged in and suddenly we were the top rated. And i was like, “Yeah, cool.”

CB: Yeah it’s probably my fault. But it helps I guess.

JB: Now we got some coverage in Swedish media. Export Music Sweden, which is like a government thing for music industry, has us on their first page that we’re “top of the pods” sort-of. So you actually have, you’ve made an impact.

CB: You’ve made an influence on me. I play songs in my car, and people ask, “who are they?”. And I say “The Bombhappies, listen to my podcast and hear some more.”

You guys totally rock.

JB: Thank you, thanks a lot.

CB: I’m glad you guys were courageous  enough to put your stuff out there.

JB: Yeah well there’s no other way to get it out there. CD is dead, and we don’t have any money to do any payola [Payola, in the American music industry, is the illegal practice of payment or other inducement by record companies for the broadcast of recordings on music radio, in which the song is presented as being part of the normal day's broadcast. ] things. So the only way to get things out is to give things away, or find people that like what you do.

CB: Keep up the good work guys.

JB: We’re going to record some new material this autumn. When it’s done I’ll send you the new songs. We have three more songs we recorded the same session that haven’t been mixed yet. Maybe they can come out earlier if we get to them.

CB: Do you guys do music full time?

JB: Two of us are students, and two of us have daytime jobs.

CB: I start school in ten days.

JB: So you’re not gonna be…

CB: I’ll still be doing the show. It’s just.. I don’t have as much time. Well it’s been a pleasure talking to you.

JB: Yeah it’s been nice.

CB: My first interview is with a band that’s hours away. More than 6 hours away.

JB: It’s 9pm here.

CB: Oh seven hours, it’s two pm here. Well I’ll let you go.

A few weeks ago I talked about MashUps, and one in particular that grazed my ever so tasteful ears. Well I found one of the two main pieces used to create it, and it stands even better alone.

At first I thought it was 3 songs,

This remix is so well done, that I would actually mistake it for a regular Justice song. It really could just blend in with other Justice songs like “DVNO” & “D.A.N.C.E.”. It’s a perfect example of why Justice is gonna be that big name in electronic music we’ll hear about for the next few years. This remix is awesome and I can’t stop listening to it.

Sorry, I’m listening to a bunch of new stuff to try and find something new and great. So I’m crashing my column to write the kind of stuff you don’t normally hear from me. And what might that be? Normal music blogging!

My #1 all-time favorite band is Franz Ferdinand. I did a report on them in 10th grade for crying out loud. Anyways, I was made aware of a new song by them earlier today, and I can’t not (grammar?) share it.

The song is called “Lucid Dreams”. This is something else that struck me. I’m big on lucid dreams. I’ve been trying all the different methods to invoke lucid dreaming for years.

For those unfamiliar with lucid dreams:

A lucid dream is a dream in which the person is aware that he or she is dreaming while the dream is in progress, also known as a conscious dream. When the dreamer is lucid, he or she can actively participate in the dream environment without any of the limitations that otherwise would feel natural to persons who incorrectly believe they are in the “real” waking world. Lucid dreams can be extremely real and vivid depending on a person’s level of self-awareness during the lucid dream. [wikipedia]

The easy way to remember it, is to think of it as a remix with more than one song.

Well, the main contributor, Nathan (my editor), emailed me about how everyone and their mum are doing remixes of MGMT (pronounced Management). Well I didn’t want to feel left out, but I also wanted to post something that no-one else is posting.

So here’s where the mashup came into play.

I actually had something planned for this week, but in the spirit of giving the people what they crave, I did some digging and found another Dub mix by Lindbergh Palace. A dub version of Umbrella by Rihanna. Which I can’t say I’m a huge fan of Rihanna, but sometimes a song gets so popular that you can’t avoid it. Umbrella is one of those songs, and I ended up kinda liking it. This mix is another quality production by Lindbergh Palace and it’s already hit heavy rotation on my iPod.

I really hope you like this stuff, because this is the kind of music I live for.

‘Dub’ has become a term for almost any musical piece that “Utilizes the remixing of prerecorded sound as a mode of artistic expression.” Taking the separate entities of a musical track and remixing them into a completely new selection has become a popular process, and can be found in a variety of genres ranging anywhere from hip-hop remixes and mash-ups to metal. In a nutshell, dub is an artistic remix. I found some dub mixes of some Killers songs a few months ago, and well they are a great introduction into what Dub is, as far as electropop goes. You’ll find that one main hook of lyrics is constantly repeated as the remixer is trying to get you to focus on those specific lyrics.

Cut Copy sits at the top spot as my number one band, and they are on the shortlist of bands that will be covered here again. Their music is a subtle kind of electronica. It combines elements of pop and rock to almost create a new genre. Poptronick? I’ll stay away from defining them and instead give you a chance to make your own conclusions.

Without a doubt, you ears will tingle, and I sure hope they bleed.

Mainly because, it’s a remix of Radiohead. I’m a big fan of those guys.

This remix is really different in the fact that it’s a different song, but the same music. A hip-hop flavored Radiohead backbeat, covered over by some smooth rap.

It’s a very poetic kind of rap, and I still enjoy it.

Vampire Weekend launched this album earlier this year, and they dropped the Insane Mix on a cd single for their song Oxford Comma. It’s a playful song, and I love it.

I’ve had this particular remix in my possession for quite some time. In fact many summer ago, well two years ago, while hanging out with Nathan (the main writer of this blog) we listened to this song. We agreed that this remix is music that takes you places.

Franz Ferdinand - Fade Together (The Avalanches Remix)

I really love The Avalanches. This remix is one of a very small number of remixes they did. I’ll write about them some other day.

The real burning question on my mind, is where does this music take you?
I imagine myself sitting in a black and white film set in the 1940’s in France. It’s raining, and I’m traveling by automobile through a deserted city street.

Deceptacon by Le Tigre

The band Le Tigre are odd enough as it is, but to remix it is quite odd as well.

Le Tigre - Deceptacon (DFA Remix)

I found that with the original Deceptacon I had a very hard time hearing the vocals, now I can hear them clearly. In fact I discovered an explicit lyric I never knew existed. Perhaps the biggest change to the song is the length. A quick three minute song is transformed into a TWELVE minute never ending dance party.

It’s an overall nice change of pace from the original and it’s something fun to pop on while cleaning or doing some other menial task. A nice danceable groove that doesn’t get on your nerves.

Remix Wednesday.

In keeping with the overall tone of the website I wanted the first song I picked to be something a little more indie-folk-pop-ish. So I dug, and dug through all my remixes, and I found the perfect song.

So today, if you’ve never had a chance to hear it, I introduce you to the Whitey remix of this glorious song. What makes this remix stand out isn’t so much changes to the overall song, for which very few seem to even be present, but rather that it changed the emphasis inside the song from the guitar to the drums. A few howling wolves and owls thrown in feel a little obtuse, and unnecessary but are also pretty fun.

I yearn for you to enjoy this chance to enjoy a song a second time.
