Thanks to NPR’s World Cafe: Next podcast, I was recently turned on to a new folk artist by the name of John Fullbright. As I did my homework, I was delighted to discover that he not only is a talented songwriter, but he is a local Okie. Fullbright grew up in Okemah, Oklahoma, which is fittingly the hometown of folk legend Woody Guthrie.
Fullbright first started to make a name for himself when he released a live album recorded at Oklahoma City’s The Blue Door back in 2009. And then earlier this year he really started garnering some attention with the release of his full length debut, From The Ground Up, on Blue Dirt Records. Take a listen to his old school folk sound with the video performance of “Gawd Above” recorded at this year’s SXSW festival in Austin, TX.
If you like what you hear be sure to catch him on tour as he comes to your city. For you Okies that pay attention to this, Fullbright will be back in Oklahoma in August, playing at Bricktown on the 23rd and in Tulsa at the All Soul Music Coffeehouse on the 25th.
