It’s been a while since we’ve had Music Video Mondays and I for one have missed them. So here I come to the rescue to bring you all a fantastic video from none other than our once regular music video contributer. I bring to you all today a video that our very own Justin Metcalfe has made for a gorgeous instrumental by The Album Leaf. Justin really shows off his talent here. With hardly any action at all, set to an instrumental track, he still manages to suck you in. Just click on the link below to watch the video.
Stereogum is doing some awesome things that I wanted to point your attention to. The first one that I want you to take notice of and show your appreciation for is their MySplice project. They just recently released the third installment to download for free. With the help of team9 they have taken some of the best/most popular songs of the year and mashed them together. I’m usually not a fan of mash ups but this project is pretty darn entertaining. Here is a couple of my favorites, if you like them head on over to Stereogum to hear the whole project.
I also want to draw your attention to a new series of stripped down studio sessions called Decomposed. They invite both well-known and up-and-coming artists to drop by and record stripped down, acoustic versions of a couple of their songs. They have only featured two artists so far, but I am already a big fan. Check out this awesome performance by The Uglysuit. You’ll gain an even greater appreciation for these guys after hearing this fantastic perfromance of “Chicago.”
That’s right. Peter Gabriel, along with some help from Hot Chip, has covered Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa. I suppose Peter Gabriel was so inspired by the shout out that received in the original song from the debut by the highly acclaimed but slightly overrated Vampire Weekend. I really enjoy their take on it, and I think that Gabriel’s voice sounds great matched up with this fun afro-beat indie pop music. This is easily one of my favorite covers of the year. I love that even beyond all of the philanthropic events that he is constantly working on along with touring and writing new songs that at his age he still finds time to do little projects like this. Enjoy this great cover and see how he handles this “so unnatural” tune.
Since two of my top three movies of the year were superhero movies (The Dark Knight, Iron Man), it’s no surprise that I am excited about the new X-Men movie coming out this next spring. Some early comments from critics and friends say that it looks kind of boring and that it doesn’t look too appealing compared to the fast-paced action of its predecessors. But I am going to have to disagree and say that it looks like it is going to be pretty awesome. I am more interested in the story than the action anyway, and I especially love the beginning of any story. Maybe that is why I liked Iron Man and the Batman movies so much, because they started from the beginning. Regardless I am pumped to see this movie next May. And I’m pretty sure that after watching this trailer, you will be too.
