Matt Pond PA – The Freeep
So I am really enjoying this whole free music trend. A lot of artists in their fight against music piracy are deciding that instead of going to battle with lawsuits they are going to just give their music away. It may sound crazy and like it has no chance of working. But so far those that have taken this route are finding success in it. From Derek Webb and his NoiseTrade project to Radiohead giving away their most recent album, these artist haven’t seemed to struggle in fact they seem to be gaining ground. And I am very excited about the most recent artist to jump on the free music bandwagon. Matt Pond and his PA band have been making great indie pop throughout the whole decade and have yet to dissapoint. In fact they wrote what may be our favorite song of the decade with their single New Hampshire off of their 2004 release, Emblems.
According to their new web-site, this new Ep was prospectively titled: The Dawn before the Dark Leaves or Water off a Black Dog’s Back or Amazing Life or Butterfly Mornings and Wildflower Afternoons or May we never go go mental, may we always stay stay gentle or The Fear of not Being Afraid or Erica Harris and her Ubiquitous Threads or The Warmth Within the Warren or Dreaming of Sleeping or Saying It to Keep It From Happening or This is not the Dark Leaves or Living for Liv Ullman or The Odds of a Sunrise or Whispering Pines or You’ll be the Rhythm and I’ll be the Beat and I’ll be the Rhythm and You’ll be the Beat or The Grass Harp or Goodbye Barcelona or Why is my copy of the Moviegoer Floating in a Puddle Beside the Car. As hysterically brilliant as all of these prospective titles were, in the end, they decided to go with simple and clever The Freeep. Get it? It’s an EP and it’s free. Hence, The Freeep. While I am sure they have never heard of these guys, and I am not trying to say that they didn’t create this title of their own thought, I feel it is my duty to point out that they weren’t the first band to come out with a Freeep. Back in 2006 Doug Castle vs. the Weather released a free EP that they too titled the Free-P. Different spelling but essentially the same name.
Here is my favorite tracks from both free EPs. And here is a link to get the rest of the matt pond PA album. Unfortunately there is no site that I know of to find the rest of the Doug Castle album. So feel free and let me know if you are interested in hearing the rest of it.
