so i am a huge smallville fan. i got addicted to this show the summer before my sophomore year in college and then watched four seasons of it with some of my suite mates that year. if you’ve never seen the show i highly recommend it. it’s got the hero, the cute girl, the drama, the action…it’s basically the best show ever. so i have started rewatching the series with my wife lately and we were watching the one where some girl was being kept in a coma by her psycho uncle, but somehow she had managed to hop over into clark’s dreams while he was asleep. anyway, as i was watching this time, i noticed that everytime that it was a dream sequence a song by r.e.m. was playing in the background, which i thought was rather clever. then i realized that i don’t know anything about r.e.m. other then some random big radio breakthroughs. so i am going to do a little research and see how great this band really is, and then i’ll let you know what i think. but until then here is one of the few that i have and love.

so i absolutely love cover songs, especially when the song is done drastically different than the original, therefore i am going to start off this soon to be regular series on cover songs with mat weddle’s version of outkast’s hey ya. now before you stop reading, just click below and start listening. while he definitely performs the song very differently, he doesn’t change a whole lot, other than the tempo and the instrumentation, and then obviously a different, and in my opinion, a more inviting voice. but for those of you who either hated on this song from the get go, i hope that by listening to this version will recognize how great of a song it really is. and for those that were able to enjoy back in the day but just got sick of hearing it everywhere they went, here is a nice and easy way to enjoy that great melody that made you want to “shake it like a polaroid.”

so i opened my inbox this morning and to my delight, i discoverd that acl has announced its 2008 lineup. which in my opinion is something to get excited about. they have the foo fighters headlining which i found to be an odd pick and not one that i would have made. but the rest of lineup is pretty stellar. it’s not that i don’t enjoy the foo fighters, i think dave grohl is incredibly talented, his music for the most part doesn’t fit the mold of what acl has been about in my opinion. but i am sure that they will put on a great show. i had many friends that saw them this spring in fayetteville and they all seemed to enjoy it. but here is a list of some of the other bands that i am excited to see on the lineup this year.
robert plant & allison krauss
beck
david byrne (former lead singer of the talking heads)
john fogerty
conor oberst and the mystical valley band
patty griffin
tegan & sara
iron & wine
band of horses
the swell season (these are the guys that did the soundtrack to the movie “once”)
jakob dylan and the gold mountain rebels
okkervil river
vampire weekend
drive-by truckers
jose gonzalez
jenny lewis
m. ward
mgmt
colour revolt
and those are the just the ones i am most excited about, in my opinion this is the best lineup they have brought us yet. so for those of ya’ll who have never been to an austin city limits music festival before, this is the year. and for those of ya’ll who weren’t convinced to go just by reading this list over the next severalmonths i will do an artist spotlight on all of the bands that i love that will be performing at acl this year. so look forward to that. but for now here is one of my favorites to hold you over. i hope your ears bleed (but not too much)
